The leap second festival is an open, free, distributed, international,
non-profit festival for art, technology and precarity coordinated on
the Internet. This is the first leap second festival. The festival marks
the leap second as deviation and glitch, a bug in the machinery of time,
and also a reality-check and celebration (glitz) of natural cycles and
physical reality, taking place at the moment when the ideal time we have
on our clocks is synchronized with the real time based on the rotation
of the earth.

The festival is open and free for anyone who wish to participate and
submit work. There are no prizes or fees involved. The festival is
documented afterwards.

The festival is open to all types of artistic expressions. Even though
the festival is coordinated and organized via the net the works
themselves don't have to be based, or available, on the net. The
festival is distributed in the sense that the works take place at a
certain time and not necessarily at a certain place. The website of the
festival will coordinate the works by organizing and listing, hosting,
exhibiting, running, and documenting each according to its needs.

The festival believes one second doesn't have to be an impossible
limitation, but maybe a creative limitation, whether or not the works
are realized as things, events or processes adapted to immediate human
perception, or as programs or code that are executed or exhibited. An
ordinary computer does a couple of billion things in the course of one
second. The leap second itself is defined as 9,192,631,770 cycles of a
cesium-133-atom. In the same way that the festival is partly conceptual
despite the physical base in earth rotation and time, the participating
works might revolve around ideas about time, virtuality, and
physicality, in addition to notions about science, machines, technology
and how they relate to natural and physical cycles. That said, there
might be other aspects involved, each own to his own, for example...

- The "formless"... The rejection of form and content and their
traditional game, in favour of horizontality, pulse, entropy, gestalt,
fleeting, and joke. The form is orderly enough - one second - but the
order is almost in the order of joke, and in the horizontality, pulse
and entropy of time - fleeting, virtual - as if to ask, did it really
happen, or what is it for something to happen, or to be?

- "one-off"... one-shot, a happening that occurs only once and is not
repeated --happening, natural event, occurrence, occurrent - an event
that happens, though with intended irregular repetition, an unstable
jiggle of the ball, keeping one eye on the ball, the blink of an eye.

- Precarity/Selfprecarization (turning on itself)...

the individual as genius artist) plus specific aspects of post-1968
politics
have turned into hegemonic neoliberal modes of subjectivation.
Selfprecarization means saying yes to exploiting every aspect of
creativity and of life…
The need to pursue other, less creative, precarious jobs to finance
one’s own
cultural production is something one puts up with. This financing of
one’s own creative output, enforced and yet opted for at the same time,
constantly supports and reproduces the very conditions in which one
suffers and which one at the same time wants to be part of. It is
perhaps because of this that creative workers, these voluntarily
precarized virtuosos, are subjects so easily exploited; they seem able
to
tolerate their living and working conditions with infinite patience
because of the belief in their own freedoms and autonomies, and
because of the fantasies of self-realization. In a neoliberal context,
they
are so exploitable that, now, it is no longer just the state that
presents
them as role models for new modes of living and working”…

The leap second. Technology has made the leap second possible/necessary.
The leap second is no natural event as are mid-summer, equinox, etc.,
even if all of them is about an adjustment of a natural cycle. The leap
second doesn't have a cultural history before technology made it
possible to measure the physical rotation of the earth accurately enough
to intervene the ideal atomic time (the second defined by the
cesium-atom). The earth rotation appears to be more variable, and the
length of a day (a physical sun-day, a rotation of the earth around
itself) is slowly increasing over time. In that way the leap second is
introduced for the purpose of synchronizing the ideal time we have on
our clocks with the natural time in the universe.
The leap second festival, in this sense, can be seen as a new way of
celebrating natural cycles, aided by technology, but contrary to the
traditional celebration of eg. winter solstice or equinox, the leap
second is not regular, but more a measure of instability, almost
virtual, and having more character of being a bug in the machinery of
time, a technological glitch one is trying to patch, at the same time
that it is a reality-check and adjustment towards nature and physical
reality. It is also this bug that is being celebrated, of the
technological deviation from the natural cycle, and nature's deviation
from technology, and their realignment in the leap second.

The festival plans at taking place at each leap second in the years to
come. The leap second are irregular and are announced by The
International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) half a
year in advance.

If the international society decides to abolish the leap second in the
future because of problems updating and synchronizing all the world's
computers to real time, the festival plan to continue like other pagan
festivals around seasonal cycles. The next international debate about
the future of the leap second will take place in 2015.

Ordinarily the leap second is added to the universal time, but the
possibility exists that it's subtracted. In that case the festival will
receive works for deletion, and the submitted works disappear when the
festival takes place at the second that is being taken away.

Festivités de juillet du Dessert de lune

Ça commencera les 2 et 3 juillet au Marché de la Poésie de Rochefort sur Loire où je serai présent en compagnie de Cécile Guivarch, de Louis Dubost, et de Francis Krembel.
    Le samedi 2 juillet de 14h00 à 15h00 Cécile Guivarch dédicacera “Te visite le monde” et “Terre à Ciels”.

"as most of you know, I have been writing and publishing poetry and drawings in journals for many years now…  I published my first poem in 1984 (in the GW Review) after like 17 years of continuous submission and rejection…  I published my second poem ten years later in 1994…  (so, I am obviously not easily discouraged)…

I am not terribly prolific so, in total I have published maybe 500 or 600 individual poems and drawings altogether since 1994…  I supposedly have work accepted for the next issue of The Cream City Review (a poem) and The William and Mary Review (two paintings) both very highly respected academic journals…

well anyway, I always said that I would do readings if anybody invited me…  (nobody has LOL) and publish a book when I was asked to submit a ms…  well, RD Armstrong, publisher of Lummox Press made the invitation:

and is putting together a book of my poetry and drawings that will be out, hopefully sometime over the next year…  I am not sure when it will be out or what it will cost, but the title will be Pleasure in a Stained Universe which is from one of my poems…  PLEASE contact Lummox to find out how to order an advance copy!!!!  since I write little poetry anymore, and am getting on in years, I do not expect there to be any other books after this one, so this will be a unique time to get a real collection of my poetry and art…  actually, I will be interested to see what of my work will be in the book!!!  since RD is doing all of the selection/editing… I hate editing or selecting my work and am glad to leave that to others… 

also, there will be two shows of my original art this summer…  the first will be at JAY Gallery in Seoul Korea  www.jaypia.com July 6 through July 19…  I will try to be there on July 6 and 7 if the flights stay open, so this is a great excuse to go to Korea and see several of my large format drawings up in one room as well as one of the diptych paintings!!!  and a fairly large number of smaller drawings and paintings…

the second show will be for the month of August at the World Erotic Art Museum in the South Beach area of Miami, Beach… this will be 18 paintings and drawings in what is my all time favorite museum of art…  WEAM houses Naomi Wilzig’s amazing collection of Erotic Art…  a brief essay about my first visit to Weam is posted at www.ascentaspirations.ca...  you can see it  by clicking on “Archives” and “Essays” and scrolling down to “My Visit to the World Erotic Art Museum…”   I will be in Miami Beach for the opening, and will let everybody know when that is…

so, it is very interesting and weird for a reclusive old sloth like me to be doing these art shows and I have not made up my mind yet if there will be others after these two…  it depends on how I feel about the experience… 

so keep in touch when you can…  I love to get e-mails and respond to them when I can…  I have recently been traveling in Washington DC and LA so will write about that when I get time….  also, attached are three new drawings…

Historique du Festival
« Les Regardeurs de LUMIERE »
Festival d'Art Sacré Contemporain
Cathédrale de SAINT-OMER


Pendant deux semaines, en juin, artistes peintres, sculpteurs, enlumineurs, poètes, musiciens et choristes transforment la cathédrale de SAINT-OMER ( pas-de-Calais, FRANCE ) en véritable sanctuaire de l'Art Sacré Contemporain.

Né du projet un peu fou de quelques amoureux des arts et de la cathédrale, le premier Festival Régional d’Art Sacré Contemporain : « Les Regardeurs de Lumière » s‘est bâti en quelques mois.

L’association « Les Amis de la Cathédrale », qui a le désir de faire de ce joyau du gothique flamboyant, seul témoin des grands édifices religieux en Nord-Pas de Calais bâtis au Moyen-Âge, un phare régional sur le plan culturel, est donc porteuse de ce projet.

La première édition, qui a emporté l’adhésion du Diocèse et de la ville de Saint-Omer qui a permis aux organisateurs de profiter pleinement de son soutien technique et logistique, a connu un réel succès auprès du public et des médias.

Plus de douze mille visiteurs ont pu apprécier l’exposition et les différentes manifestations artistiques qui ont émaillé cet évènement durant deux semaines.

Des artistes de renommée internationale comme Mahjoub BEN BELLA ou René DUCOURANT ont tout de suite accepté de rehausser de leur présence cette manifestation d’envergure qui a réuni à leurs côtés artistes régionaux et locaux.

Les membres de l’association mais aussi un grand nombre de personnes extérieures ont apporté bénévolement leur contribution à la bonne réalisation du Festival : nettoyage et « dépoussiérage » de la cathédrale, décoration, montage et démontage, surveillance et accueil du public, vente des œuvres …

Suite au Festival, l’association a enregistré plusieurs nouvelles adhésions spontanées est a reçu d’autre part plusieurs courriers d’encouragement.

Ne bénéficiant d’aucune aide financière extérieure pour la première, les organisateurs ont pu équilibrer leur budget, notamment grâce à la vente des œuvres et du catalogue de l’exposition.

Depuis, les organisateurs ont donc le souci d’être à la fois plus efficaces (le comité d’organisation du Festival s’est élargi et renforcé ) et d’offrir au public une prestation de qualité supérieure ayant une résonnance nationale ; les artistes participants à la deuxième et troisième édition venaient de tout l’Hexagone et bénéficient pour plusieurs d’entre eux d’une renommée certaine.

Au niveau des animations ponctuelles, un récital poétique, des auditions d’orgue, un concert, un atelier « artistes en herbe », du chant lyrique, un ensemble de chorales, sont autant de temps forts du Festival.

Le Festival bénéficie maintenant du soutien de la Ville de Saint-Omer, de la CASO ( Communauté d'Agglomération de Saint-Omer ), du Conseil Régional du Nord-Pas de Calais et du Conseil Général du Pas de Calais.

La quatrième édition de notre Festival d'Art Sacré Contemporain " Les Regardeurs de Lumière " se tiendra en la cathédrale de Saint-Omer du samedi 11 juin au mercredi 22 juin 2011.

Le vernissage ( en musique et lumières et ouvert au grand public ) aura lieu le vendredi 10 à partir de 19h00 en présence de tous les acteurs du Festival.

A noter que les organisateurs ont le souci de préserver la gratuité pour l'exposition et l'ensemble des prestations qui couvrent le Festival.
